What is body jacking?

Body Jacking is like a carjacking. You see a car you want, and you jack it away from the other guy.

In the Altered Carbon universe, humans have been reduced to data in DHF (Digital Human Freight), which allows humans to achieve functional immortality.

In Altered Carbon Season 2 Episode 1, we see a type of body jacking where a bounty hunter was sent to convince the main character into working for a Meth on Harlan’s World. Tokeshi refused, and the bounty hunter killed him. This was just a sleeve death because his stack was not damaged, which meant the bounty hunter likely pulled his stack out and took it to a VR jack where he might be more willing to say “yes.”

Here’s the question. Why did Tokeshi have to be convinced to do anything? He was at the mercy of the Meth, and there was nothing Tokeshi could say about his fate at this point. All the bounty hunter would have to do is needle cast Tokeshi to the Meth, who could then put Tokeshi into the new sleeve, which was to be done anyway, and Tokeshi would then have a choice, but once his sleeve was dead, there was no reason to convince him of anything. It’s not like there was any real reason to get the consent to needle cast someone into a new sleeve. Also, once a Meth has your DHF, you’re more or less…
